The planetarium was constructed in 1972 when the high school addition was built. Voters were able to choose between a planetarium and swimming pool, or a planetarium and additional gymnasium. The citizens of East Lyme decided against the swimming pool option and chose to add another gymnasium with the newly-constructed planetarium. Upgrades to the technology were never made during its 41 years of operation.
